Canyon Express “6 Pack” is open! 12/28/2023
This past Saturday marked the debut of Mammoth Mountain’s latest addition, the revamped Chair 16, also known as the Canyon Express. Originally inaugurated in 1994, Chair 16 underwent a transformative upgrade during the recent offseason, replacing the outdated infrastructure with the cutting-edge Doppelmayr D-Line six-pack detachable high-speed chairlift.
Representing a significant advancement for the California ski resort, this state-of-the-art chairlift boasts a game-changing design. With a capacity upgrade enabling it to accommodate 25% more guests than its predecessor, the new Chair 16 aims to alleviate congestion at the Canyon Lodge base area, promising a more streamlined and enjoyable experience for visitors.
Featuring enclosed top and bottom terminals, the chairlift is designed to expedite its opening process during challenging weather conditions, such as deep storm cycles and windy days. Moreover, the realignment of the chairlift slightly to the north serves the purpose of minimizing the impact of snow slides from the nearby Avalanche Chutes, enhancing safety and overall operational efficiency.

Origin of Mammoth Lakes 05/11/2023
Mammoth Lakes is a town located in the Eastern Sierra region of California, United States. The origin of Mammoth Lakes can be traced back to volcanic activity in the area millions of years ago.
The town is situated in the Long Valley Caldera, which is a large volcanic depression measuring approximately 20 miles long and 11 miles wide. The caldera was formed by a series of massive volcanic eruptions that occurred around 760,000 years ago. These eruptions released enormous amounts of volcanic ash and debris, blanketing the surrounding landscape.
Over time, a series of lava domes and volcanic cones formed within the caldera, including Mammoth Mountain, which is the area’s prominent landmark. Mammoth Mountain is a lava dome complex that was formed by multiple eruptions over several hundred thousand years.
The name “Mammoth Lakes” is derived from the discovery of ancient mammoth bones in the area during the 19th century. Fossils of Columbian mammoths, which were extinct elephant-like creatures, were found in the vicinity of the town.

Gold was the primary target of early mining activities in the area. The first significant gold discovery was made in 1877 by a group of prospectors known as the Mammoth Mining Company. This discovery led to a rush of miners and the establishment of several mining camps in the vicinity.
